Adhesive Press
The press is a peripheral device to a larger automated machine. I cannot disclose the exact application of the device; rather, I will briefly expand on the architecture.
The device was designed to join a non-woven fabric and strip of comfort material using a pressure sensitive adhesive. It is pneumatically driven, heated, and controlled by a PLC system. Due to specification and geometry of the materials being combined, the press had to feature several safety elements to aid the production worker during operation.
Featured items such as a spring loaded catch that held the two materials in position for the press to be closed. This ensured that the operator could activate the press from a safe position. From a production standpoint, the device would not activate if the supply pressure or if the surface temperature of the device was not within of the acceptable environmental parameters.
Although in its current state the process is semi-automated, by controlling the variables listed above, the number of production defects found through our quality system were reduced significantly.
